Grooming and care of Biewer Yorkies and Yorkshire Terriers:

The Biewer Yorkie and the Yorkshire Terrier's coat must be brushed daily to keep it free from matting and must be bathed regularly due to its length and density. The fur on top of his head must be tied on top so as to keep it from causing eye irritation.  Both breeds eyes have a tendency to water a bit and therefore care must be taken to assure they do not end up with eye infections. I keep the hair clipped out of their eyes as this will helps prevent eye infections.

Unlike Yorkshire Terrier puppies, Biewer Yorkie puppies do not have their tails dock and removal of the dew claws is optional.

I feed all of my Biewer Yorkies and Yorkshire Terriers Royal Canin Small Breed Special.  My puppies get the small breed puppy and my pregnant and "mother" dogs get Pro-Start.  All of these products can be purchased at Pet-co or Pet-smart or from your local vet.

I also make sure I keep on hand Nurti-Cal or Nutri-Stat.  Both breeds are prone to becoming Hypoglycemic.  Both of these products work well for quickly providing nutrition for puppies or dogs who start to show signs of this.

Biewer Yorkies and Yorkshire Terrier Health Problems and Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of the both of these breeds is around 12-15 years, and there are a number of health problems to look out for with these breeds. This includes luxating patella, liver problems, inflamed pancreas, low blood sugar, allergies, dental problems, and sensitivity to chemicals and drugs. They do not fare well in cold weather and should be provided with a sweater if out and about in the rain or cold. They must also be protected from rough handling and heavy object because of their size and fragility. Their teeth also need to be cleaned on a regular basis and checked for deciduous (milk) teeth which need to be removed by the vet if they do not fall out on their own by the time the dog is 7 - 8 months.
